hippie baby names

hippie baby names

during the mid-80s, back when i hovered right around 20 years old and worked in a gas station, a 35 year old “hippie” co-worker and i were stocking the cooler one day when he announced that his wife had just given birth to a baby girl and they were trying to figure out the perfect name for her…

we had a “j” in there with us, so i lit up and began to ponder hippie baby names… i took a nice, deep drag off said “j”, held it for a moment, and when i went to exhale the smoke, along came two words with it:

“serenity willows”

he took a puff, pondered a moment, then went out to the front of the store and picked up the phone to call his wife… she answered and he simply said “serenity willows” – a moment of silence followed – he then hung up the phone and told me that i had just named his daughter.

i always figured that she’d hate me for it, but upon meeting her years later she ran up to me and gave me a huge hug for giving her such a beautiful name. lol! 😀

  1. Hilarious! I wonder if that’s how Skunk Anansie got her name. My daughter was actually named, Stella, Tequila, Jack, Liberty Cap for about five minutes… my wife is far too sensible. But my daughter Jemma is happier that she isn’t named after a tin of french lager.
